The news has made it to us that Ballroom legend, Anthony Hurley from the UK who now resides here in Australia, has made the decision to hang up his teaching shoes, and retire from both teaching and judging.
Anthony has been a wonderful support to us at Outside Change and the Outside Change Cup and Freedom To Dance Ball. He has been a wonderful friend, guide, mentor and support with our event.
Anthony with wife Fay were champions of every major championship in the world as both Amateur and Professional with some of their titles being
- 1960 & 61 British Amateur Ballroom Champions
- 1961 UK Open Amateur Ballroom Champions
- 1971, 72 & 73 UK Open Professional Ballroom Champions
- 1971, 72 & 73 European Professional Ballroom Champions
- 1969, 70, 71 & 72 British Professional Ballroom Champions
- 1971 & 72 World Professional Ballroom Champions
- Plus so many more titles, the list could go on and on.
At the 1973 British Championship, Anthony & Fay retired from competition and were defending their title for the 5th time. They came up against long time friends Richard & Janet Gleave, as the British Championship is danced over 4 dances only, Anthony & Fay won 2 dances and Richard & Janet won the other 2 dances resulting in a tie for the title.
After a count back of first place markings, the British title went to the Gleave’s, with Anthony & Fay in the runners up position. Anthony & Fay have been leaders in the Ballroom world and have inspired so many of us for so many years. He will be greatly missed by so many but is just a facebook message, phone call or email away.
Thank you Anthony from everyone in the Ballroom community, we look forward to seeing you hopefully at the Outside Change Cup in the future as one of our VIP guests.
Pictured below are some actions shots from Anthony & Fay’s competing days and also from Anthony’s time at the Outside Change Cup and Freedom To Dance Ball.
