As Amateurs, they spent two years living in the UK, competing and learning from the world’s best coaches. Their competitive achievements include Professional Standard finalists in all Australian National Championships and Queensland Open Champions.  They were also New Zealand Open Amateur Standard champions.

  ANDREW PALMER – TAS

Andrew was born in Hobart and began dancing at the age of 11. His career has taken him around the world competing and performing. Andrew toured Asia with “Burn the Floor” directed by Jason Gilkison.He has won numerous National and International Titles and danced on series 3 of Dancing with the Stars.
He is also heavily in administration for DanceSport Australia being the Chairman of the DSA Marketing & Communications Commission.

  LAURIE & DIANNE PETERSON – VIC

Laurie has been former Queensland Champion in Ballroom, NV and Latin, a former Australian and South Pacific Champion.

Dianne has also been a former Queensland champion in all 3 styles and Australian Pro 10 Dance Champion, also winning the Australian Pro Rising Star Championship and representing Australia at the World Pro 10 Dance Championship in the USA.

Laurie & Dianne have made the move from sunny Gold Coast to Melbourne and can now be found teaching in Victoria.

  GRAHAM THOMAS – WA

Graham Thomas has had a hugely successful career winning every major Ballroom Dancing Championship in Australia and being undefeated in the Australian Professional NV Championship an amazing 6 years in a row from 1975 to 1980, un unbeaten record in New Vogue!

He has lived and studied/trained in the UK in both the Ballroom and Latin styles and competed on the International circuit also.

JULIE PATCHETT – WA

Julie and her former dance partner Les, were and incredibly successfully Australian and International Amateur & Professional Couple. Just a few of their achievements include :

  JOHN & JOSEPHINE TAN – SINGAPORE

John Tan & Josephine Liew started teaching ballroom dancing in 1989. At first, they taught by holding classes in community centres and at home. As their student population grew, they made the career defining move to set up their own studio. John & Josephine Dance Creative was eventually established at Parklane Shopping Mall in 1999. After 16 years, John & Josephine Dance Creative relocated to bigger and upgraded premises at Peace Centre in 2015. The school has also been rebranded with the launching of JJ Dance Academy. Today, their school is one of the most  reputable dance schools in Singapore.

  CHERRIE KISSITCH – MALAYSIA

Queensland born and bred, Cherrie has been involved in DanceSport since primary school.

In 2009 Cherrie and her husband relocated to Beijing in order to follow his work opportunities.  The move encouraged and inspired Cherrie to further her studies in DanceSport theory and to achieve international accreditation.  Now settled in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Cherrie continues to study and teach DanceSport theory as well as coaching some of Malaysia’s most promising amateur couples.

SHANE LAWTON – VICTORIA

Shane Lawton started dancing at MarShere’s founding studio in Ferntree Gully as a young Teenager and quickly moved into a competitive career. Moving successfully through Junior, Youth, Adult and then turning Professional has seen Shane compete all over the world. He retired from Competitve dancing in 2014 as the Professional New Vogue Champion with his then partner Melanie Valenti, a lifelong dream of theirs fulfilled.

  LISON NEPVEU – CANADA

Lison is a well respected Adjudicator, Chairperson of Adjudicators and Professional in the Canadian Dance community.  All of us at Outside Change are very honoured to have her join our team of contributors.

MARTHA A. HARPER – USA

Martha A Harper, from the USA:   Martha’s experience in ballroom dance spans twenty years to include American Smooth, Latin and Rhythm, recently focusing on International Standard.  She holds a Master’s in Educational Leadership with a Bachelor’s in Sociology.

She is a retired legal secretary, a published author and instructional designer. Welcome to the team Martha!

  DAVID BYRNES – VICTORIA

David is a 5 times Australian Professional Latin champion. He started dancing at the age of 19 and his main coaches throughout his career were Helen & Robert Richey. Some of his achievements are :

Adam Penn has extensive experience in writing biographies and articles on the history of Ballroom Dancing and Great Ballroom dancing couples. He is our newest contributor and we are thrilled to have him on board! Look out for his “Biography” article in each edition.
